I'm almost sure and dont' kill me if I'm wrong that ssh works above the
telnet protocol and not replacing it..
sperate between dissing the telnet protocl the telnetd and the telnet
client:)
maybe one day ssh would replace telnetd but meanwhile for comptibilty with
the rest of the world telnted is still needed not mention that sniffing
ssh isn't that impossible as you make it sound (altough I agree it is
safter than telnet)

| yes, I'm well aware it's a complex protocol with smart ability
| handshakes. one exploit was even detected in it where the remote side
| can ask for the use of some remote library maliciously and all sorts of
| fun stuff. I meant to say that it's not a carrier protocol (OSI level 4
| and below, roughly defined).

| ssh lets me avoid having my password snooped, my remote activities
| spied upon, and let's me log in as remote root. Telnet is so passe it
| should be taken out and shot in our day and age. the client is still
| great for debugging though, by connecting to random TCP ports and typing
| directly. that's a different issue.
