Telnet must die. There's no telnet anymore, there's SSH. Why you need
telnet if you have SSH? Just because you have a (particullary bad) telnet
client in windows distribution? That's not a base for security decisions. 
As for FTP - there are many FTP servers that run in standalone. While I
don't support the idea of disabling inetd, minimizing number of services
is good. And if you end up having no services in inetd - you don't need it
indeed :)
