I have a WD 9.GB disk with a Promise PCI controller (the HD brand is
irrelevant, I believe as its the controller and it's driver that
matters).

Wanna operate this under Linux ? well... (unused disk being loaded into
my brain...) First - I DO have support for that drive under linux, so if
you'r case is like mine - your safe (but I dont know how much work will
you need to invest in it...:-)
I read about ATA66 support under linux. IIRC, there is supposed to be
such support already for some controller chipset, but my recompiled
kernel with that support couldn't recognize the HW. Anyway, this is an
ongoing work, so dont be surprised I'm what I've said - and will say
ahead - isn't updated.
I dl'd Promise ata66 drivers for Linux from their web site. I think it's
still a beta or somethin', but it works. My driver (rpm) was written to
work with RH6.0, which means kernel 2.2.5, and not my 2.2.12 , so I had
a problem loading the module, but it was pleased when I "forced" it. I
added it somewhere on my init scripts (before the mountings...). I do
get a warning message regarding the version mismatch, but it works fine
for both R/W .

Say, about that: I also noticed no noticable change (at least under
Windoze). Is it supposed to be like that ? if the change is so minor -
where did the double clockspeed(right term?) went ?

Boaz.

P.S.,

You need to, or should, verify that your HD is enabled for 66 (! - I
heared that many HD come with a default of 33) and verify that the
promise card is set to work with that HD at double speed (at boot screen
- it should display "Ultra 4" near your HD label. thats the way it goes
on my machine)
