16 bit color on mach64 server

How do I use 16 bit collor on a mach64 (ATI AGP rage pro turbo) server?
i managed to get the resolution up to 1600x1200 but it still uses 8 bit
color. Any way to change it?
How do I know how many colors the display uses btw?
