I have solved the problem.
I was running ppp-2.3.6-3 from RedHat.
It would seem that the problem was introduced after ppp-2.3.5-4, as
this version works fine. I do not have ppp-2.3.6, but ppp-2.3.7
fails, as do all subsequent versions up to and including ppp-2.3.10-3.
Does anyone know what has changed on the way?
