I tried this once (on a RH4.1) system, and it can work, but means
constant troubles. Find all scripts and config files that have root in
then (crontab, etc.) and change this to the new name. Then, every time
you install a new program, do the same.

My advice is - don't do it. I did it, since "the other admin" thought
that a bit of security through obscurity does no harm, but we gave up
eventually.
