1. Once a page has finished loading in Netscape, "ESC" will stop
animations.
2. There is a nice piece of software called Junkbuster that acts
as a proxy and saves you from having to see advertisements.
http://www.ijb.org/ I think - or junkbuster.org. It's not difficult
to set up, and it actually works against most ads. I believe it
does not have an option to stop animated GIFs, though. Most of the
evil animations are in ads anyway, so it's a good start.
