Probably there will be people here with more insight, but usually you only need
two files:
/etc/resolv.conf - Here is a sample of my own (ofcourse it's configured for
different nameservers than yours should):

domain perfectotech.com
search perfectotech.com
nameserver 10.114.41.131
nameserver 192.168.100.40

and /etc/nsswitch.conf which tells how to search for DNS names (this is pretty
standard):

# /etc/nsswitch.conf
#
# Example configuration of GNU Name Service Switch functionality.
# Information about this file is available in the `libc6-doc' package.

passwd: compat
group: compat
shadow: compat

hosts: files dns
networks: files

protocols: db files
services: db files
ethers: db files
rpc: db files

netgroup: db files

            My 5 pence,
                Yuval
