XFCE is real nice, much faster than kde and gnome,
and you can always use "just a wm" such as windowmaker, fvwm, etc.
As for StarOffice,
I run it sometimes without a window manager at all (it has its own wm).
either in full screen mode, or "integrated desktop" mode.
Make an xsession file for it that says "starofficepath/bin/soffice" and
you're set.
It also has its own browser and you don't have to use netscape at all.
