I have bought a sony crx100e about a week ago, and it works fine.
it's an 2x/4x/24x ide cdr, it was very easy to install.
The salesmen in 2 computer stores in tel aviv told me I need to
pre-order to get SCSI CDRs,
and the prices were about double of the IDE version (controller not
included, about the same writing speed).
About compatibility, all of the recent SCSIs SHOULD work fine if they
support mmc.
The same goes for IDE as it is basicly does somekind of SCSI emulation.
(use the scsi-ide module)
Read the cd-writing howto for more details about that.
Also,
always ask if you can return/replace it in a case it's not supported by
linux,
Maybe this should go without saying,
but i have had problems replacing a display card,
the "repairman" insisted to take my machine, and told me the problem was
that it was not formatted (it had no dos partitions)
After they formatted (!) my HD they sent it to me as it was before,
telling me to buy windows and see if it works.
Cheers,
Yoni.

is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaner software...
(I was pointed out that Microsoft hardware usualy works)
