I think it's probably still there, only renamed /dev/hda8.
Change your /dev/fstab to point to /dev/hda8 instead of /dev/hda9.

Yes it should.

Nope. Extended partitions are built using a linked list, and they are numbered
sequentially according to their location on the list (beginning at /dev/hda5,
since /dev/hda1 through /dev/hda4 are primary partitions). So when you remove
a partition, all the partitions after it should change their name.
