Yes, it is harder to install. There's no hardware detection, and the
package selection app (dselect) is hard to understand if you don't
read the help screens. Its package manager (dpkg) is also somewhat
less simple than rpm. That's what you have to pay for raw technical
excellence. (Although that may change soon; see http://www.stormix.com.)

If you have a spare partition or hard drive, give it a try. The true
diamond in Debian is the apt tool, so after you install, read the docs
on apt, configure it and play with it a bit. You'll be amazed, because
there's nothing like apt in the other distributions.
