I think all of you missed the point completly , or assumed he already did
it ( though from the quote above I don't think he did) - he didn't choose
screen resolutions for X, so ofcourse he can only do 640x480 . 
Usually I'd call it safe to assume that you know how to do this, but
lately I've been getting calls about things similar to this. if you did
choose display modes, then I'm sorry - I didn't mean any disrepsect  :-)

using XConfigurator there's a list of resolutions and color depths where
you mark with an x what you want to be able to do. as I've seen so far,
any corolation between what you chose and what you really get is purely
coincidental :-) . try XF86Setup and under 'modeselection' click every
resolution that you want to be able to do with your screen , and then
click a color depth that you know you video card is able to preform at the
highest resolution you chose (someone suggested to always pick 8 bit for
the first time, and I must agree).
