1) thanks for everyone who helpd.
alien does seem to work good. glad you told me about it.
the problem is that this process is never ending :
I was tring to get EconoFast on my printer, slowly but surely
I found myself replacing all the RH print system packages
with debian ones.
and then problems started ...
as one of you said : alien is good for single stand alone package.
it's probably not a good idea to start messing around with your print
system...
2) I found a solution for my problem (how to get the EconoFast mode on my
hp deskjet 600 to work).
I always keep forgetting that there are so many people out there that
almost always someone has already written what you need, so there's no
need to reinvent the wheel.
make a search in the redhat website for the keyword "hpdj".
this is the name of the ghostscript driver that's not part of the
ghostscript distro that comes with RH 5.2. (this driver has allot of
options for PCL-3 printers).
there you will get the website of someone that has already compiled
gs with the hpdj source, and has packed it nicely in rpm format.
also see the REAME file (it's a link from that page).
there's a simple copy & paste you have to do to get the
RH printtool to recognize this driver.
it works, although this README file is not so clear.
