Thanks for the suggestion.  I found a utility in the Debian e2fsprogs
1.12-4 package which does just that.  It's called "findsuper" and it
indeed found my superblock.  But I couldn't be 100% sure where exactly
the partition ends and had to restore my machine before the trip next
week so I just wiped out the disk and re-installed Linux and Lose98
Enabled (as opposed to the non-Enabled).
