First, there's no "X windows". It's calles X, X Window, X Windows System,
but not X Windows. Windows is Microsoft GUI. Type "man X" and read.
So, X is an engine. It, basically, knows to draw dots, primitives, texts,
windows, etc. And Gnome, KDE, etc. uses X to draw those panels, buttons,
etc. Tcl/tk is not desktop environment, though. Tcl/tk is tcl - which is
extensible command language, and second is GUI toolkit. Neither of them
are hardlinked to another - there's Perl::Tk and standalone TCL
applications. For Gnome, the GUI toolkit is GTK+, for KDE - QT.

No. But Linux can run on top of umsdos partition, created by DOS. I don't
consider it to be good idea if you are going to use it, though.

VMWare is an application that allows to virtualize your hardware. This
means that you can run some OS inside VMWare window and it would think
that it runs on vanilla hardware. There are limitations, certainly - not
all "real" hardware can be accessed via VMWare (and you, possibly, don't
want win95 to have direct access to your partition tables anyway :), but
in general it's very convenient - you can have entire OS (or pack of them)
laying in the file on your disk and run in a window. Good solution for
those with strong processor (a *must* - VMWare takes your processor two
generations back - pentium to 386, pentium II to pentium, etc :), Linux
and occasional need for Office, for example. Or those who wants to safely
try a new OS without full reinstall from backup later.
Nothing can run on win2000 or nt5, because both don't exist. There is (or
will be?) VMWare for NT.
