To be more specific, I'd forward you to
/usr/doc/kernel-package/README.gz, it gives the exact step-by-step
instructions. Just avoid fakeroot and run the compilation as root.

I try to follow it (the "stable" staging area) but last time I tried apt
didn't get the Packages file. I tried to use the sources.list stanza's
from the Gnome FAQ - could you send me the ones that work for you?
