Why don't you recompile your kernel anyway. With kernel-package, it's
a piece of cake. You probably have kernel-package installed (check
with dpkg -l kernel-package); if not, install it from the CD. Then go
to /usr/doc/kernel-package, and there you have exact instructions.
It's very simple, and is a good idea, regardless of the sound issue.

Yes, I'm using Gnome 1.0 all the time. I downloaded it from the
staging area. It is very stable with Window Maker and has yet to crash
o nme *once*. It's much less stable with Enlightenment though. So just
don't use Enlightenment.
I have the staging area, as well as non-free & non-US (which you
haven't got from CheapBytes), on a CD. If you want a copy, send me mail.

The nice thing about Windows is - It does not just crash, it displays a
dialog box and lets you press 'OK' first.
