If your machine uses PAM, you can use various servers for
authentification by dropping in the appropriate module
(LDAP, SMB - ie, get a PDC to auth logons, Netware etc).
Also check out NIS. If you want a single point of logon,
there is an Israeli company that sells such a product, but
the name elludes me. If you got for Kerberos, make yourself
aware of the problems associated with using it for local password
validation. I think the Kerberos FAQ mentions this in some detail.
