I dug this out from our bugzilla. There are cache races associated with
this configuration that make it impossible to generally support it.

There was a discussion to support it for limited scenarios (e.g., SAP
deployments), but the best practices have been changed to not suggest
such a cross-mount any more, but have an external NFS server.

If you want to discuss this with Michael further, he can look it up in
bug 778116. But the limitation is imposed on the cluster folks by the
core OS/VM.
