I found an post from last fall ( https://lists.uni-koeln.de/pipermail/linux-fai/2007-August/005225.html) that points to the local mirror being broken. So I tried with using an official mirror site and it worked. I am not sure what the difference is, as I have been using my local mirror for some time now. The only thing that I am not mirroring is the source files. Would that be a problem? Oh and a few of the folders in the root of the mirror. But I have been getting everything else from Debian down.
