Hi Oliver.

Sorry for my late reply but university kept me quite busy lately. :(

Interesting. Since I switched over to my new computer 1 1/2 years ago from a
P3 500 (pata) to my A64 3500+ (sata), I always experience problems when I
put the system under high i/o load which results in sluggish system
responsiveness. For example: do a untar kernelsrcs in the background and try
working in X... the only solution I have come up with so far (with the help of
the kernel mailing list) was to renice the untar process to 19. Still working
on that front.

Not the case here:

Tried all that: with/without full/voluntary preemption. Differenz hz values.
Some pci options (routeirq, nomsi, nommconf) as well as noapic. No effect.

Default here.

I will give that a try.

One more observation I have come up with:

*) with a 2.6.18.x kernel and a large bufsize, it almost works perfectly. I
get a underrun from time to time but basically it's quite rare and not
   reproducible.

*) with 2.6.19-rc{2,3} I always get underruns when I switch from X to the VT
and back. Now I have nailed that down to the nvidia driver. (please, I know
binary only drivers are bad... but the nv or nouveau drivers are far from
being usable and I don't know of any good -open- graphic cards) As long as
I use the nvidia binary only driver (even the newest beta release), those
underruns happen. When I switch over to the nv driver, everything works
perfectly and no matter what I do: no underruns.

Nevertheless- with 2.6.18.x that worked almost fine. See above.

Besides -even though a different matter- all AC3 streams I get are out of sync
with the video stream. :-( So far I have no clue at all how to fix that.

I appreciate any help or hints I can get.

Have a nice weekend,
matthew.
