Are you using Linux-2.6 with VDR and a ext2/3 filesystem for the video 
storage?

It seems that this combination causes very poor disk performance, 
resulting in the kernel spending a lot of time accessing the disk.

Does "vmstat 1" report a high number in the "cpu wa" column?
