Our German Shepherd had a huge tick on him in the middle of winter!
He fig in the snow covered leaves in which the ticks were still alive.
Our nine pound poodle had 165 ticks on her! Only a few had attached.
She had on a tick collar but must have walked through some sort of nest. We
were walking in conservation land in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Fortunately, she received a clean bill of health.
Ticks are such a scourge.

We've learned that above 40 degrees, ticks are still active!

Per our vet’s recommendation (and our experience), we keep our dogs’ tick
collars on them even through the winter.
(Only removing them during the coldest periods when it’s below freezing for an
extended period of time).

The scientific literature on ticks indicates that while they cannot move below
freezing, and therefore don't attach, they do not die. There are not a lot of
studies of this, but freezing does not appear to kill them at all, just
immobilize them while frozen. I wear my permethrin treated clothes always when
the temperature is above freezing.

I think ticks don’t die in the winter, they go in to the ground and hibernate
Tall boots, gloves, changing clothes and showering are good solutions

Huh, sounds like they're still there! Maybe my (newer) habits of wearing tall

Oh interesting. My dogs are usually my tick indicators and after a pretty quiet
summer, the last few weeks have been awful. Just the other day I picked like a
dozen off of my golden retriever!

I've been out doing "spring me" a big favor by weeding out my garlic mustard

weird is, no ticks. Is it just me or are other people experiencing a low tick
fall as well? Drought? I usually get a tick bite or two in the fall.
