Hi Shira,
I too had this happen to one of our vehicles, parked in our driveway, in 2020.
While insurance covered the extensive damage (this was during the height of
lockdown and this car didn't see much driving, so the mice had lots of time to
do their damage!) we had to have the car towed and lots of repairs done.
Insurance did cover it, thankfully.  The service department said this has
become more common as many parts are now coated with vegetable oil, which
attracts the rodents.  Their recommendation was to leave moth balls or Irish
Spring soap in the engine compartment, as the smell repels the rodents.  It has
worked -- so far! -- to prevent this from happening again.  There are
repellents specifically marketed for this purpose too.  A quick google search
will help you to find them.  There are both sprays and "hard" repellent tabs
that you spray or leave in your engine compartment.  The main ingredient seems
to be peppermint oil, so you might find that helpful.  It is a low tech
solution, but sometimes they are the best!
Good luck!
