I’ve used wood burning stoves for more than 45 years here in Lincoln and have always been very careful disposing the ash.
Today a simmering ember from a previous day’s disposal - which typically would spend more than a week in an ash can before transport to our larger outdoor ash pile but didn’t this one time - met a dry leaf and they hit it of. It was spark at first touch and then things got hot real fast. Suddenly there was a lot of smoke and a lot of flame. As the stored garden hoses were getting uncoiled, reconnected and into action, it became obvious it was time to call in the Pros. The Lincoln Fire Department responded immediately and extinguished the still heavily smoldering and smoking burn area. They were great. So - a word of caution, by me and from Lincoln Fire Chief, Brian Young, who has seen this many times - you can’t be too cautious or careful when disposing ash from wood stoves and/or fireplaces. All’s well that ends well - but this was an adventure I intend to never repeat. jfu...@comcast.net 617 835 3087 (C) __o _'\ <, ..(•) / (•)
