After about 35 years I decided to discard the original boxes used to ship my
old stereo receiver and speakers. The boxes were wrapped in one strand of tape,
some of it paper tape and the boxes held up fine for 35 years. If I order
something now, it will be wrapped in about 3 miles of plastic tape.

Can someone explain why UPS shipping 35 years ago worked fine with one strand
of tape, but nowadays they need to use miles of plastic tape? This seems
wasteful to me, or maybe I am missing something.

Thanks,

-Christopher Eliot
