Subject: Re: [LincolnTalk] Hanscom Expansion

Few people besides those living under the flight path are aware that Hanscom already facilitates 38,000 jet flights annually as a portion of 120,000 flights overall.  It is New England's second busiest airport after Logan.  Past predictions that jet flights would increase dramatically over time were sadly were sadly correct.  Massport itself admits they are building the project to meet increasing demand.

The North Airfield Project would double the existing private luxury jet hangar space by adding more than 500,000 square feet of facilities.  This is the largest expansion in Hanscom's history and the largest proposed project anyway in the country, perhaps the world.  This will create a classic situation of induced demand, the economic phenomenon that describes how increasing the supply of something can lead to an increase in demand for that thing. For example, if a road is widened, more people may start driving on it, which can increase congestion levels to similar levels as before the road was widened. This is because making something easier to do can lead to people doing it more.

The estimate of 6,000 additional flights may be conservative, and was made by a highly respected independent consulting firm whose report was submitted to Secretary Tepper as part of the environmental review.  She took it seriously and rejected the shoddy Draft Environmental Impact Report submitted by the develops and Massport.  6,000 more flights is a mere 15% increase after doubling the hangar space.  In ongoing years, why wouldn't we see even more traffic?

Let's not compromise on carbon pollution as we enter this terrifying period of climate emergency.  If any other highly polluting industry announced plans to radically increasing its output, people from all over that state would be voicing their objections.  More than 90 local and statewide organizations have joined the Coalition to Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere.  More than 13,000 people have signed a petition to Governor Healey asking her to cancel the project.  I urge everyone reading this to do the same if you have not already done so.  You can do that by following this link:  Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere

Sincerely,

Trish O'Hagan and Alex Chatfield
