This week is Walk Bike Roll to School week for the students at Lincoln
School. So that the adults in Lincoln don’t feel left out, the Bicycle &
Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) is offering Walk Bike Roll FAQs week
for adults; all you have to do to participate is read the daily message
sent to LincolnTalk.

Day 1:

Q: If I’m driving, how much space do I need to leave between my car and
pedestrians/cyclists that I am overtaking?

A: Per the Massachusetts Vulnerable Road Users Law, which went into effect
April 1, 2023, drivers need to provide a “safe passing distance” of at
least 4 feet when passing vulnerable road users. (MGL Chapter 90, Section 14
<https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXIV/Chapter90/section14>
)

Q: Am I allowed to cross the yellow line to pass bikers and walkers?

A: Yes. Motorists are explicitly allowed to cross the yellow line in order
to pass “when it is safe to do so and adhering to the roadway speed limit.”
(MGL Chapter 89, Section 2
<https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXIV/Chapter89/Section2>
)

Q: If there are cars coming the other way, I don’t want to cross the yellow
line; how am I supposed to pass walkers or bikers in that case?

A: If a driver cannot provide 4 feet of passing distance, the driver should
slow down and travel behind the vulnerable road user until they can pass at
the mandatory distance. (MA RMV, Laws for Bicyclists and Motorists, Chapter
4

)

Q: If there is a curve ahead so I can’t see if cars are coming the other
way, I don’t want to cross the yellow line; how am I supposed to pass
walkers or bikers in that case?

A: If a driver cannot provide 4 feet of passing distance, the driver should
slow down and travel behind the vulnerable road user until they can pass at
the mandatory distance. (MA RMV, Laws for Bicyclists and Motorists, Chapter
4
