Hello Lincolntalk Community,
I am a Lawrence, MA native and I am writing to highlight this great historic event to mark your calendars with. The *Bread & Roses Festival* takes place annually on Labor Day on the Campagnone North Common. This year, it will be held on Monday, September 4th, 2023 between 11:30am - 6:00pm. https://www.breadandrosesheritage.org/becomeavendor My siblings and I will have a table at the Bread & Roses Festival to raise awareness and hopefully donations to support the scholarship fund that we started in honor of our parents, Ugo and Katherine (Marcello) San Antonio. (Information about this is at: https://www.eccf.org/san-antonio-marcello-scholarship/) Since we started the fund, we have given scholarship awards to about a dozen Lawrence High school students in need. This is our first year setting up at The Bread & Roses Festival but we hope it will help us grow the fund so we may award more scholarships. More of the origins story: The Bread and Roses Heritage Festival commemorates the 1912 strike by Lawrence mill workers and is viewed by many as a watershed moment in the labor union movement. My grandparents who all emigrated here from southern Italy worked in the mills and were part of that strike. While that fact was a well-kept secret and source of some confusing feelings for them, it is a source of enormous pride for us, their grandchildren who see it clearly for what it was/is - an act of bravery, courage, and justice. The festival endures and draws a political and protest folk music following, but has mainly become meaningful to the current immigrant population in Lawrence, many of whom grapple with similar struggles and concerns of affordable housing, equitable work conditions, more than merely living wages but, Bread . . . & Roses too! I hope you feel moved to come to the festival, and enjoy a memorable day in Lawrence filled with music and ethnic foods. If you do, be sure to stop by our table and say hello!
