Kate, I apologize for your rusty water situation. If we are doing any main flushing that we know will cause a possible disruption in water quality, we do our best to let Lincoln residents know.
While we have had no other rusty water complaints recently, our office is at 77 Sandy Pond Road and I noticed a little rusty water coming from our hot water this morning. I have no operational explanation for why this occurred. We have done no main flushing recently and have had no main breaks for maintenance work that would explain this incident. We do know that some cast iron water mains in town (as we have on Sandy Pond Road) have tuberculation, or mineral deposits lining the walls of the pipe. It is possible some of this broke loose and discolored the water. If the brown water is coming from only your hot water, it is possible your hot water tank needs flushing. Please refer to manufacturers recommendation for this procedure. Lincoln, like most communities in Massachusetts and around the country, has aging water infrastructure. We know our water mains need replacement. We are currently in the process of generating an Asset Management Plan with an engineering company that will prioritize assets that need replacing and help us generate a replacement schedule. With 53 miles of water main in town and an average cost of 1.3 million dollars to replace one mile, please understand the challenge to modernize our distribution system is substantial. If your rusty water continues, please contact me and we will schedule water main flushing in your area. Hello All. Your water, Kate, is simply unacceptable. You should not have had to reach out to neighbors or town officials, regarding the color and concern regarding your water. I moved to Lincoln in June of 2022. I had lived in 3 different homes in Lexington, and lived in Lexington for more than 50 years, prior to moving to Lincoln. I can without reservation state that Lexington would not have allowed you to suffer any water concerns without contacting each resident prior to any experience such as yours. It simply would have been anticipated, diagnosed and addressed. Your water, is deeply concerning and should be addressed, immediately.
