from LPS Superintendent Becky McFall:
We and all of the communities around us are seeing an uptick in COVID cases,
but at this time we are not adjusting our mask protocol. The district’s
voluntary weekly pool testing continues through June, and we will monitor cases
in our schools in order to make decisions about steps that need to be taken to
mitigate the spread. You can review the Lincoln Public Schools daily COVID
case data on our COVID-19 Data Dashboard
<https://sites.google.com/lincnet.org/lpsreopeningplan/dashboard>.
Please keep in mind that information about individual cases is often more
important than the total number of cases when making decisions about protocol
changes. When a household is impacted by COVID-19 it is common for several
siblings test positive at one time. This is less of a concern related to the
need to adjust our practices than if many students in the same classroom test
positive within a few days of each other. When we have what may be a cluster
of positive cases in a class, we send home at-home tests to the students in the
class so they can test daily for several days. Our goal is to identify cases
as soon as possible.
The number of student cases over the last 7 weeks is relatively stable, no big
increases or decreases. However, the number of employee cases has risen. We
have had 11 employee cases in the last week with 8 of these in the last two
days. This can put a strain on our staffing, and we must all do our part to
cover for colleagues when necessary.
I have been in communication with superintendents from several of our
neighboring communities. We are all watching our trends closely. Outside of a
small number of instances where schools have asked a single classroom to wear
masks for a few days, there are currently no returns to mandated masking, that
I know of at this time. There are some districts issuing strong
recommendations that everyone mask indoors. At this time, we are not adjusting
our mask protocol but, everyone should feel free to make the decision to wear a
mask at any time. We will continue to review our active cases daily in order
to make the best possible decisions on behalf of our students and employees.
