First Parish in Lincoln is pleased to be offering this pivotal class once again this year. Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a human anatomy and sexuality class.
Are you wondering why a church might be offering such a class? We believe our bodies are sacred. We believe our bodies are worthy of love - safe, consenting, affirming love. We know that youth who are given the language to talk about their bodies and the functions of their bodies in healthy ways are empowered to keep themselves safe and healthy. Knowledge is power. 8th graders are on the cusp of becoming more aware and active; we want to give them the knowledge they need. We also know that parents are their children's primary sex educators. OWL begins with a parent orientation so you have a better understanding of what we are offering. You'll learn that, during OWL classes, we go over the facts and encourage youth to talk with their parents about their values. Running in tandem with the OWL class is our "Parents as Primary Sex Educators" monthly small group for any adult raising children in 6-12th grade who would like to share resources (support, knowledge, media links, etc.) with other parents; facilitated by a trained OWL leader. Together, we can help each other become more comfortable in conversations with our youth. (adults who enroll children in OWL are not required to attend this group, but it is encouraged) For more information, please see this brochure... https://www.uua.org/files/documents/owl/owlflyer_7-9.pdf Parents are children’s primary teachers, but what is society teaching our children about sexuality?
