There have been many things about the pandemic that has had a tremendous effect
on the South Sudanese community. If you have a few hours I will be glad to
share. But in the meantime here is a story - we need help!
There is a family who lives in Lowell. Their son,age 3, has been diagnosed by
the primary care Docter with "Suspected" Autism.
This family is experiencing extreme stress . The mother is finally back to work
and the 3 year old has just started preschool. However, because of his
behavior, the preschool calls the mother frequently asking her to pick him up
because the school doesn't know how to work with him.The mother then has to
leave her (low paying ) job and pick him up. She understands that the job may
fire her because she has missed so much work.
Apparently the child needs to get on MassHealth and also needs to be evaluated
by a Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Specialist and diagnosed with autism
for the child to get access to many services to help him tranistion to school.
HOWEVER, getting this evaluation done can take MONTHS because there is a
backlog caused by the pandemic.
I wonder if there is a specialist who would be willing to do this probono so we
can do this quickly and get this family services? Does this make sense?
