This is an unfortunate divergence between Debian and Ubuntu syntax. On debian (dpkg 1.16.3 or later) it is: dpkg --add-architecture armel On Ubuntu (dpkg 1.16.1 to < 1.16.3) it is: echo "foreign-architecture armel" > /etc/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch That should allow $package:armel as well as $package:armhf packages to be installed, but I don't know if that will actually solve your problem.
