Well, that's conmux being stupid. I agree with you (even if others don't) that at least looking at not using conmux would make sense. I think this might be as simple as including a command to run in the device config file such as "cu -l /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 115200" or "telnet 192.168.1.11 7003" (and a command to run to power cycle the board) and passing that to pexpect rather than "conmux-console $board".
