We currently use the "Home" launcher, which is the default launcher you get if you just build AOSP Android without any tweaks etc. "Home" launcher is a really rudimentary home screen experience and as you pointed out not the most eye candy UI you can think of. But note that for 11.05 our focus was on getting the base system up and running. For not so far future we are looking into other launchers that might match your expeceted android phone user experience better - like Launcher2.
