The suggestion of extra-offset is again a good one. Changing my definition of \responsum to responsum = \lyricmode { \once \override LyricText #'extra-offset = #'(2 . 0) \markup{ \bold \fontsize #-1 "℟." } } does the job nicely, thank you.
