Which version are you using? This problem has been fixed in the 2.15.x. Search 'hideNotes TabStaff' in the google issue tracker (make sure to search all issues, not just the open ones) and you'll find all the details.
hideNotes is much more handy than tags, so I think it's worth upgrading to the latest development version (which is also a release candidate, BTW).
