Looking into XeTeX-reference.pdf, this works for me (assuming that you have emmentaler-20.otf installed where XeTeX can find it): The scripts.varsegno sign: \font\1 = "Emmentaler-20" \1 \XeTeXglyph \the\XeTeXglyphindex "scripts.varsegno" \bye BTW, this is XeTeX from TeXLive 2012.
