When in doubt, count steps going up. c and g (ascending) are in different relative octaves; c and f are in the same. c . d . e . f =>count 4 notes, so it's the same relative octave. c . d . e . f . g => count 5 notes, so it's a different relative octave This is insensitive to accidentals. Whenever I am on the boundary and I can't remember, I just count the notes going up.
