Using your idea I created a function that allows me to adjust the text
offset for each instrument since it proved to be different. Using this is a
little bit ugly since you are adding text above a pause that can be in very
different positions. but it gives a decent output.
divStaff = #(define-music-function (parser location offset) (pair?)
                  #{
                    \once \override Staff.TimeSignature #'transparent = ##t
                    \once \override Staff.Clef #'transparent = ##t
                    \override TextScript #'extra-offset = #$offset
                  #})
% Now I can adjust the offset for each instru

 \new StaffGroup <<
   \new Staff {
     \set Staff.instrumentName = #"Vla. "
      a b c d | a b c d | a b c d | a b c d }
   <<

       \new Staff {
       \divStaff #'(0 . -1)
       \stopStaff s1^"Solo Vc."| \startStaff \clef bass a,,4 b c d | a
b c d | a b c d }

     \new Staff {
       \divStaff #'(0 . -1)
       \stopStaff s1^"Solo Vc." | \startStaff \clef bass a4 b c d | a
b c d | a b c d | }
