Fingerings stop avoiding slurs when they are placed within a chord <...> or
even a single note <>.  Is this not a bad default behavior?  For example:

\include "english.ly"
\relative c'
{
    \clef bass
    c8-1( d-2 e-3) b-1( f-2) g-3( a-1 b-2)
    <c-1>( <d-2> <e-3>) <b-1>( <f-2>) <g-3>( <a-1> <b-2>)
