*The Sacred Harp, 1991 Edition (which is the dominant 4-shape tunebook) uses dots for extenders .. see the page at the link below. Not sure whether you all consider the Sacred Harp Publishing Company as a "reputable publisher", but for a chunk of your user base, it's the gold standard.*
