Yes!  I think this is a great idea.  I've talked about it a bit in my reply
to
Patrick.  But it occurred to me after sending that arranging single- and
double-string hammering -- which accounts for about 90% of the metal
music of the 1980s -- would be a nightmare without this feature.  There
ought to be a way to express the notation for Van Halen's Eruption
succinctly in Lilypond, and I think you've hit on it.
