You're right, but it still seems unsatisfactory. In fact the
merge _is_
completed when it shouldn't be. And the warning doesn't draw
attention
to the incorrect merge; it says "ignoring too many clashing note
columns",
something different entirely.

It's not that simple. Playing with the example in the Learning
Manual at
http://kainhofer.com/~lilypond/Documentation/learning/real-music-example.html#real-music-example
shows that a warning is _not_ always given. The warning depends
just
on which voices the notes are in, not on anything to do with
merging. If
the three notes are in three separate voices, as they are in the LM,
no warning appears.
So I think this needs a doc change rather than a bug report. I'll
do that.
