Ok, thanks. I tried that, and for a simple example it fixes the problem. But in an actual score with lots of barring indications of various sorts, you get to a situation where a staff runs off the right-hand edge of the page because there are many consecutive bars where a line can't be broken without breaking a spanner. See attached, which is what happens with the modified define-grobs.scm.
So I guess I'll have to live with the hack solution I proposed.
