I offer the following argument: 1) all stems in non-polyphonic situations should reach or cross the middle line. 2) Tremolo beams on single stems are placed on the part of the stem furthest from the notehead. 3) in ambiguous situations involving whole-notes, notation elements are placed as if the whole-notes had invisible stems.
