Hi Chip,
Would be nice to be able to center the rests between the bar line
and the first note in the measure.
You can certainly make that happen with some clever coding/tweaking…
However, it's not standard engraving practice: just like notes,
performers wanT (need) to see the rest *precisely at the ("vertical")
moment when the rest event begins*. Otherwise, it becomes difficult
to play (esp. sight-read). Full-measure rests are the only exception,
as far as I know.
