Hi James, you might want to call LilyPond with the --include or -I=/whatever/your/dir/is option, as explained in http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.11/Documentation/user/lilypond-program/Command-line-options. (As stated on http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=391 there's a bounty for whoever will be able to make this more convenient and use-able within LilyPond files directly.)
